The climate revolution in agricultural technology is ensuring the future of the health industry.

As climate change threatens crop production, agricultural technology, especially artificial intelligence, is helping the health industry ensure a sustainable supply of natural ingredients. From medicinal plants to cosmetic raw materials, AI is reshaping the supply chain from farm to product.

The health industry is no longer just a buzzword, but a movement. According to a study by McKinsey & Company, the industry was valued at approximately $2 trillion in 2025 and is expected to continue growing. However, overall health is heavily dependent on agriculture, which is suffering from extreme heat, severe weather, pest and disease resistance, and other climate change issues. Climate resilience and yield stability have now become the main drivers of agricultural productivity, rather than just output.

The health industry and farmers are collaborating to source ingredients for everything from cosmetics to protein powders. Artificial intelligence is transforming the way they cooperate.

“AI is rapidly transforming agriculture from a traditional labor-intensive industry into a data-driven ecosystem that extends far beyond food crops to health, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, medicinal plants, bio-based ingredients, and sustainable supply chains,” said Dr. Sonia Goel, a senior scientist at biotechnology company oloBion, in an interview with Newsweek.

The most impactful AI applications are those that can directly improve productivity, quality, sustainability, and ultimately profitability. Precision agriculture, which uses AI to analyze satellite imagery, sensors, and weather data to optimize irrigation and fertilization, is becoming increasingly popular.

AI tools like Plantix and Prospera can detect plant and pest diseases early, allowing farmers to intervene before significant losses occur. Machine learning models can also help growers predict yields and plan harvests.

Ingredients such as mushrooms and other medicinal plants, bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals, adaptogens (like ginseng), plant proteins, and essential oils all come from cultivation. But medicinal plants are fragile and susceptible to climate variability and disease. Other ingredients require precise soil health conditions to maximize their bioactive compounds.

A 2025 review of 219 studies on medicinal plants found that climate change is rapidly altering the ecology of these plants, to the extent that a coordinated response is urgently needed “to ensure sustainable production and use.”

“AI is extremely useful in automatically controlling irrigation and fertilization,” Goel said, as it can optimize plant health through data from soil moisture, humidity, and light sensors.

Many health brands advertise precise concentrations of their therapeutic ingredients. Machine learning algorithms can analyze agricultural datasets to predict the phytochemical composition of crops, helping companies validate their claims.

It’s not just the consumable side of the health industry that is leveraging AI-driven agriculture. Many cosmetics rely on plant-derived ingredients: aloe vera, lavender, calendula, argan, jojoba oil... the list goes on. AI can also identify growth conditions that maximize specific compounds related to skin health, such as antioxidants or anti-aging properties. Skincare companies are even beginning to use AI to identify new plant species and compounds that may have cosmetic uses.

"The health industry will greatly benefit from AI's ability to optimize ingredient quality, improve sustainability, and enhance supply chain resilience," Goel said. "For an industry built on natural ingredients and consumer trust, AI is both a competitive advantage and a path to a more sustainable future."
